A. Problem Identification and Justification
A2.0: Research Problem Statement
Designer: Javier Prieto-Duenas, Victoria Florence Savarino, Fabio Nierhoff
Problem: Children, teenagers, adults, and even the elderly are not washing their hands as often after they go to the bathroom, gardening, and many more activities that could affect the human immune system. Many people who go to the bathroom spend at least 10-15 seconds on washing their hands after peeing, or pooping, and some who use soap don’t wash thoroughly. Time constraints, a lack of cleanliness and a shortage of supplies are among the major barriers that many people face when washing their hands. My proposal is to create a device that could wash the hands of any age in a fast, accurate, and healthy manner
Who: All Ages
When: Will be implemented by mid 2017 or 2018 if product is approved and mass produced by shareholders, and investors.
How Many People: The concept of hand hygiene is very important in todays day and age.An overwhelming number of students (89%) aged 8-17 say they always wash their hands after going to the bathroom at school. But time constraints, a lack of cleanliness and a shortage of supplies are among the major barriers to students washing their hands at school more often. Fifty-one percent of kids report that their teachers do not set aside time to wash hands before eating, while 63 percent of parents believe that their child's teachers sets aside time for them to wash their hands before eating. Number one reason kids don't wash their hands as much as they should in school is that they don't have the time (43%).
Business Problem Statement
The need for better hygiene is critical for people of all ages, and many of those people can't wash their hands probably or has no source of water. The typical consumer uses at least 1 gallon or more of water in order to wash their hands, but many don’t wash thoroughly causing them to continue wasting water, and raising their water bills. What if there is a device that not only helps the typical consumer, but as well as many third world countries that are in need of proper hand hygiene. The automatic hand washer can be the device that would revolutionize the normal method of washing hands, and help many people live a long and bacteria free life.
Design Statement
In order to create an effective handwasher we want to implement many design aspects to make it effective. Our main design idea is to make the handwasher portable, which is different from anything out in the market. By making it portable it will be used by many people, and especially used in third world countries where sanitation is a big problem. Inside of the hand washing area we want to have brushes that are soft, yet are able to clean off particles of dirt. Inside we will also have a soap dispenser that will give or device the sanitizing aspect. With products that are out on the market they have a certain soap that only works with that hand washer. We want to make it easier for human use by allowing people to pick the type of soap that they want to refill it with, and therefore they can use different soaps for the different degree of the use.

A3.1: Problem Statement Research
Sources (APA format):
Artifact Summary:
The device will be able to cut bathroom hand washing time to 10-15 seconds per person, and will allow little kids to wash their hands thoroughly to reduce risk of sickness. The device will have sensors to indicate when an object such as a hand is inside its compartment and begin its purpose. The device will be light, small, portable, and easy to use/set up in order to be use in any location with a water source available. Such as third world countries where man people have no way to wash themselves properly. Certain features such as portability, automatic sensors, and more will be inputted into the device.
Artifact Critique:
The artifact provides validity to our project in the way that it shows us that there is a major problem with sanitation in the united states, and around the world. Conflict could occur only when certain situations occur when limited resources is in use by a third party. Lastly, further research is needed in order to create, and distribute the product, such as electrical information, wiring, welding, and plumbing.
